Sleep deprivation comes in all shapes and sizes, including the medications to treat it. So how do you know which one to choose? Well, through your severity of lack of sleep and through your doctor’s expert opinion, you will be able to take the BEST medication for sleep deprivation available to you.

If you are suffering from back pain or other physical pain, then sleep medication may not even be necessary. If you cannot sleep because of pain, then you should take over the counter pain reliever, or if needed, prescription pain reliever. Also, if it is a permanent pain, then you may want to consider getting a new, comfortable mattress. New and improved mattresses are available to be made to your specific needs, and it may allow you to find comfort and get the best night sleep in years.

If you are suffering from sleep deprivation from other causes, then your correct medication depends on your history and the severity. If you are just beginning to not be able to sleep or if it only happens occasionally, then over the counter medications are the best for you. Start out with half of a dose, and if you start needing more you can take a full dose. Once you become immune to this, talk to your doctor. To avoid becoming immune to the medication, only use it when you need it, try to avoid making it permanent or a regular thing.

If you are feeling the effects of sleep deprivation and it is affecting your life, than start out by using over the counter drugs. Try using them to allow you to obtain a regular sleeping schedule. Once you feel you have obtained a regular sleeping schedule, try to gradually reduce your dose and then stop using the medication. If you still have trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor.

If you are severely sleep deprived than you should see your doctor immediately. Tell your doctor when the last time you slept was, or how long you have been sleeping at a time. Let your doctor understand the amount of sleep you’ve gotten. Also, tell your doctor what has been keeping you up. Together you two can work and try to eliminate the factor and help you sleep better at night. If your doctor does choose to prescribe you to a drug than the choices vary, and it may take a few different trial prescriptions to know which one will work the best for you.

Sleep deprivation can be very dangerous and should not be taken lightly. We need sleep to be able to function in life and control our emotions and actions. Sleep is extremely important, and you should talk to your doctor so that you are able to get a great night rest every night. There are many different types of prescription sleep medications that your doctor may prescribe to you if you need it, but it is recommended you stay away from it until it is absolutely necessary.
