Barley is an important cholesterol lowering supplement widely used for lowering LDL and total cholesterol. Beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber present in barley plays a major role in controlling cholesterol level. Patients with high cholesterol level are advised to include barley in their diet schedule. Lack of side effect is a main advantage in preferring barley as the cholesterol lowering supplement. Artichoke extract is another cholesterol lowering supplement used for retarding the rise of LDL. Intake of artichoke extract enhances the bile production in liver which in turn enhances the excretion of cholesterol. Antioxidant property of artichoke extract also helps in reducing oxidation property of LDL cholesterol there by reducing the chance of arteriosclerosis.

Fish oil is one among the commonly recommended cholesterol lowering supplements by physicians. Reducing the formation of triglycerides is the main benefit in using this cholesterol lowering supplement for treatment. It may sometimes interact with blood thinning substances like warfarin. So it is good to seek the advice of your health practitioner for knowing the correct dosage level of medicine. Oats is another natural supplement used for lowering high cholesterol level. Soluble fiber content in oats plays a key role in reducing cholesterol level and heart diseases. Flaxseed is a commonly suggested cholesterol lowering supplement used by patients. This whole grain, enriched with high value of alpha linolenic acids and lignan lowers the level of triglycerides. Sitostanol, beta-sitosterol and blond psyllium are other best known cholesterol lowering supplements.
