Constipation refers to difficulty in passing stools. It causes pain, embarrassment and even serious damage to the intestine. There are some foods that relieve constipation. For breakfast you may prefer prune juice, oats, shredded wheat, raisin toast or whole wheat bran. For snacks you may consider yogurt, raisins, apple, rhubarb or cherry pie.

Taking extra fiber in your diet is believed to prevent or alleviate constipation problems. Since fiber is not digested by the human body, which passes through the digestive system unchanged. Once it reaches the colon, it provides roughage that helps clean the colon walls. This roughage, or cleaning action, helps the colon muscles to move other solid waste materials through the entire length of the colon, and dispose of it through bowel movements.

Fiber can also be included in your diet in the form of nuts, seeds, herbs and supplements. Foods that promote bowel movement are cabbage, papaya, peas, black sesame seeds, coconut, sweet potatoes, asparagus, oat bran and castor oil. Drink plenty of liquids, at least 8 glasses per day.
