Heart disorders are the leading cause of death in the planet. Regardless of age and gender, heart disorders can affect people of various races and social background. The problem is exacerbated by poor diet and sedentary lifestyle that affects one’s health. As a result, the victims of heart disorders today become younger and younger. During pregnancy, heart disorders are very common and they can cause a wide range of complications that can undermine the health and safety of both the mother and her child.

Heart Disorders and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s cardiovascular system is stressed, which can worsen any existing heart disease. As a matter of fact, women who have an existing heart disorder are commonly advised to go slow and be careful in getting pregnant because of complications it can cause. During the early part of pregnancy, mild heart disorders may be experienced. By the 34th week of pregnancy, cardiac output can increase by as much as 50 percent. Up to the time of labor, the cardiac output of a pregnant woman increases by about 20 percent with each contraction. It is during this time when a pregnant woman with severe heart disorders is at the greatest danger from death. On the other hand, cardiovascular output does not return to pre-pregnancy levels until a few weeks after delivery. Aside from an increase of cardiovascular output, the following are the common manifestations of heart disorders during pregnancy:

1) Dyspnea
2) Systolic murmurs
3) Palpitations
4) Jugular venous distention
5) Tachycardia
6) Edema
7) Cardiomegaly

Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Disorders During Pregnancy

Diagnosing heart disorders during pregnancy is through clinical evaluation or echocardiography. Diagnosis through the use of methods that emit radiation are commonly ruled out because of the risk both to the woman’s health and to that of the baby. Moreover, frequent prenatal visits are also instrumental in detecting signs of heart disorders during pregnancy.

In treating heart disorders during pregnancy, the main consideration that doctors pay attention to is to balance the beneficial impact of the medication against the possible risks that a woman may incur due to exposure to the treatment process. One of the most common treatments is to take medications that melt arterial blockages, especially those caused by fatty substances. On the other hand, vasodilators are also used, but their application is very much measured to make sure that there is no excessive intake of them that will be very harmful to the pregnancy.

Ways to Avoid Heart Disorders During Pregnancy

Because of the complicated means of treating heart disorders in pregnant women, the focus has now shifted towards preventing their occurrence. Here, it is important to make sure that one keeps her body healthy. One way to do this is to avoid excessive weight gain as well as to monitor one’s intake of foods. An obese woman has greater chance of developing heart disorders. Likewise, living a healthy lifestyle and regular exercises can also help in keeping heart disorders during pregnancy at bay.
