The diagnosis of "sciatica" means that there is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve provides information on the movements of the leg, and sends information about sensations to the brain. The sciatic nerve is quite large, in fact, is the largest of the body's peripheral nerves. The sciatic nerve is formed by the lower segments of the spinal cord, which consists of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots of the spine. Causes of Sciatica
1. Lumbar spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal cord (a channel inside the vertebrae that contains the nerves) in the lower back that can compress the sciatic nerve.
2. Spondylolisthesis - a condition in which a disc can slide forward over the vertebra below it, pinching the sciatic nerve.
3. Tumors in the spine can compress the sciatic nerve root.
4. Infection in the spine.
5. Damage to the spine.
Symptoms of Sciatica
1. The pain is usually worse with both prolonged sitting or standing. Often the pain is aggravated by the position of sitting low, like standing up after sitting on a toilet seat.
2. In most people, the pain gets worse by sneezing, coughing, laughing, or a hard bowel movement. Bending backward may also worsen the pain.
3. You may also notice a weakness in the leg or foot, along with the pain. The weakness can be so bad that you can not move his foot.
Treatment for Sciatica
Conservative treatment
Conservative treatment is aimed at reducing pain. Initial treatment starts with cold packs or heat, NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), muscle relaxants and painkillers.
Education about proper mechanics (bending and lifting), physical therapy, epidural steroid injections may also help patients return to their normal activities.
Surgical treatment
