If you've decided to pursue cosmetic and plastic surgery options to improve your appearance and self confidence, there are a few things you need to keep in mind in order to properly prepare for your procedure. Of course, you first must be mentally prepared to undergo surgery, as any such medical procedure carries its own risks. However, there are some things to remember in order to physically ready your body for surgery, as well as prepare for your recovery upon returning home.

Get Organized: Preparing for Post-Operative Recovery

Well before your surgery date, try to prepare meals that can be frozen so you can eat healthily afterward. During recovery, you'll need plenty of quick snacks that contain protein such as yogurt, cheese and even boiled eggs. Eating low-sodium foods may help to keep swelling at bay, too. You'll also want to purchase some flexible straws to make drinking your fluids easier; this is especially true if your procedure deals directly with the face or mouth in any way.

In addition to planning what you will be eating immediately after surgery, you'll need to prepare a comfortable space to rest and recoup. Multiple pillows will help you to change positions and keep from getting stiff. You'll also want some form of entertainment to pass the time, such as access to a television, movies, books and magazines. Make sure your remote control is easily accessible as well.

Items to Purchase Ahead of Time

There are a few specific supplies and tools you'll want to pick up before your surgery, as they'll come in handy during your recovery. Ice packs should be plentiful and waiting in your freezer before you return home. These will help to reduce swelling and pain in the area where your surgery was performed.

Eye drops will also likely be necessary, as many post-op patients find their eyes can feel dry. Laxatives will also ensure your body stays on track; your medications may cause constipation as a side effect.

Now is also a good time to invest in any creams which reduce scarring, as well as petroleum jelly and general first aid supplies to care for your incisions. These should include a thermometer, antibacterial soap, dressings, gauze and bandages. Go ahead and fill any prescriptions you have prior to surgery so you don't need to stop and wait at the pharmacy after your operation.

Additional supplies that will make your recovery easier and less demanding include an intercom, bell or other device that will allow you to call for help easily. A phone with a speakerphone feature next to your recovery area will also reduce the need to continually get up and down every time someone calls you. You should ask your doctor if he or she suggests investing in a shower chair and handheld showerhead for easier bathing. This will largely depend upon the type of surgery you have and how long your recovery will likely be.

Prepare Your Body

If you smoke, you'll need to quite two weeks or more prior to your surgery. This will largely reduce the likelihood of serious complications during your operation, and give you enough time to escape major withdrawal symptoms from the lack of nicotine.

Taking any type of aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications prior to surgery is largely ill-advised and should be avoided. These can cause excess bleeding and affect your body's ability to repair itself immediately after surgery.

When dressing on the day of your surgery, choose loose-fitting clothing that are free from complicated ties, buttons or snaps. You'll want something you can get into and out of easily, as you will most likely still be under the effects of anesthesia and pain killers when you do so.

Recruit Help

Find a trusted friend or family member who can drive you to and from your surgery, and plan this well ahead of time. You'll also want to ask someone to stay with you for the first 72 hours to supervise the early part of your recovery and keep an eye out for any problems. This person can help you take medicine, feed you and get you back and forth to the restroom when needed.

Follow Your Doctor's Instructions

Prior to surgery, ask your physician for a copy of his or her protocol if you haven't already been given one. This will outline any specific suggestions that your particular doctor will have for you. Also, ask about any additional directions that pertain only to your specific situation such as prescriptions you're currently taking or any specific risks you may encounter.
