This is a very common question from our prospective patients to our surgeons during the online preconsutlation at SurgeonHouseCall.com. The reason is obvious. Many women with upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and even arm numbness want and would benefit from a breast reduction. However, most common breast reduction techniques produce significant scarring over the lower half of the breast. This significant scarring can lead to limited clothing selection and increased self consciousness of this important aesthetic area of the body. This leads us to liposuction. With its small and well hidden incisions, it would seem that this would be used more for breast reductions. So can it be done?
The short answer is yes. This is a very well described technique, but the downside is that it has shown success in a very select patient population. Ideal candidates for this technique are women (or men with gynecomastia) that have excellent skin tone and fatty breast tissue. Excellent skin tone usually goes hand in hand with youth. Unfortunately, youthful breasts are firmer and more glandular and fibrous than older breasts. As women age, this glandular tissue turns fatty. So to find the combination of fatty breasts in a young woman is actually very unusual but not impossible. Some general guidelines are listed below.
Ideal Candidates for breast reduction by liposuction:
• Women that do not have pendulous breasts (often signifies more glandular tissue than fat)
• Women who are not thin (thin women tend to have more glandular tissue than fat)
• Women that do not have excessively large breasts (liposuction normally provides a 30-50% reduction in size)
• Women that do not have excessively dense breast tissue (often signifies more glandular tissue than fat)
• Women after menopause (during menopause fat replaces glandular tissue)
Some surgeons are utilizing ultrasound assisted liposuction and laser assisted liposuction to utilize this technique on younger women with dense breast tissue. These techniques allow the liposuction canula to penetrate denser tissue by melting the tissue around the canula. This technique may also allow some additional skin tightening from the heat energy released from the devise, which can contract the dermis. This allows select surgeons to offer this exciting technique to more patients who are very concerned with scarring but would benefit from breast reduction.
