Is your partner waking you up in the middle of the night due to loud snoring? Know that you're not alone. More than half of adults snore occasionally. It can be very helpful to learn why and how snoring occurs, and some natural remedies you can use instead of expensive medical attention.

During sleep muscle tone in your tongue and soft palate tend to decrease. They become more relaxed and can collapse together. This contributes to snoring. Other soft tissues, such as tonsils and tongue, can produce sounds that add to or change the quality of the snoring.

The position of the sleeper affects the amount of snoring. Lying on your back allows your tongue to fall back toward your throat and block your airway; so you are more likely to snore when you are lying on your back.

Other factors of snoring can be caused by blockage of airway. Anything that obstructs your airway will also contribute to snoring. For example, you are more likely to snore if you have large adenoids or a large tongue or if your nasal passages are swollen from a cold or allergies. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are the primary cause of snoring in children.

Older people have less muscle tone that leads to snoring. Consumption of alcohol, medicines and tiredness cause snoring.

Certain issues cannot be avoided which lead to snoring. The issues can be a narrow throat, a cleft palate, enlarged adenoids and other physical problems.

Men have a thinner passage of air than women. When people are obese, they tend to have more fat in the neck area and this causes blocking of air.

Difficulty in breathing and emptiness in the throat area are caused by Sensitivities, wheezing, cold and related problems.

Altogether these states cause sleep apnea. Even snoring causes sleep apnea.

When these symptoms are not felt snoring is one small thing that can cause many diseases. It can cause high blood pressure and thereby lead to for heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney disease.Tiredness, concentration loss, irritation, muscular pain, headaches are the symptoms of oxygen deficiency.

Definitely see your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions but don't be afraid to let your doctor know that you are interested in natural remedies first and expensive equipment or even surgery should be a last resort.

Changing your lifestyle and kicking bad habits can actually help you with snoring. Losing weight, stopping smoking and alcohol, reviewing your medications, and sleeping posture can help get you and your partner a better night of sleep.
