The number of people that die from cigarette related diseases is staggering. It is estimated that of the 58.8 million deaths worldwide, 5.4 million can be attributed to smoking related diseases or illnesses almost 70% of those deaths are in the developing world.
Its not hard to understand why such a large number of deaths can be attributed to smoking. Heart attack, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and throat, larynx, mouth and lung cancer are all among some of the diseases smoking contributes to.
The World Health Organization estimates the total number of smoking related deaths over the course of the 20th century is nearly 100 million an absolutely staggering number. Tobacco use was labeled the single most important preventable risk to human health in developed countries and an important cause of premature death worldwide by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In the developing world, the percentage of smokers is actually on the rise where as it us steadily falling throughout the rest of the world. Smoking is not at all in the list! However let me tell you that, smoking is the disease? Answer is no and if you did not know, then smoking causes seven of the top ten causes of death in list! This puts the smoking as a second major cause of the death all over the world!
Studies have also established that smoking, no matter whether active or passive, increases risk of getting following diseases: stroke, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis, HIV susceptibility, prematurely, lung cancer, as well as low birth weight. All these diseases are in the top ten causes of death! These diseases are also related to the smoking just because cigarettes & tobacco products has carcinogenic & mutagenic substances.
The news gets even worse for smokers and the cigarette industry. The World Health Organization predicts 10 million people a year will be dying from cigarette related diseases by the year 2030 which would make it the biggest leading cause of death worldwide. The death rate for smoking related illnesses for the 21st century is expected to be ten times that of the 20th century according to the WHO forecast.
Of course, none of this is likely to have any effect on preventing new smokers from taking up the habit. Since most people take up smoking in their adolescence when their peers have more influence over them than their parents, teachers or healthcare professionals, they are far more likely to pick up the habit to fit in without thinking they will get addicted or considering the negative impact on their health. Today, the current or else former smoker dies on every 6.5 seconds. Each of them puff of the cigarette is equal for losing 15 minutes of life. The smoker's life expectancy is also reduced by around 2.5 - 10 years. In United States, more than 443,000 Americans are dying from smoking and in 2015, the smoking is expected to kill around 6.5 millions of people.
