Every pregnancy is supposed to be a happy journey for every couple. The journey is more joyous for a woman because it is now a realization of her role as the giver of life to this world. In any case, every couple are expectant over each pregnancy, looking out to an expanded and happier times ahead with the arrival of the baby.

However, despite its being considered a generally happy stage, there are instances when a pregnancy is dotted with pains and worries. This happens when there are complications during pregnancy that puts to risk both the health of the mother and her baby.

Thrombosis and Embolisation in Pregnancy

One of the common problems that a pregnant woman will encounter during pregnancy are thromboembolic disorders. A leading cause of maternal mortality, thromboembolic disorders refer to a combination of two separate disorders that nonetheless can happen too close to each other to result to the ailment.

Thrombosis refers to a condition wherein blood clots form in the blood vessels, causing blockage of the blood flow in the circulatory system. On the other hand, embolisation refers to a condition when a cause of blockage in one part of the body travels to other areas of the body and cause blockage there as well.

Thromboembolic disorders are common during pregnancy because of the increase in the capacity of the veins to carry blood as well as the increase of pressure in the legs. However, while thromboembolic disorders are common during pregnancy, they are more common and more dangerous during post pregnancy stages. This is due to the vascular trauma to the person’s cardiovascular system. Because of this, there is greater risk for a person top develop thromboembolic disorders after a caesarian section delivery.

Diagnosing Thromboembolic Disorders During Pregnancy

The problem with thromboembolic disorders is that they do not, if rarely, show definite manifestations of the disease on their own. Most of the symptoms of thromboembolic disorders are the same symptoms that people may experience with other ailments such as swelling of the ankles, edema, cramps, and muscle tenderness.

In diagnosing the ailment, doctors commonly resort to Doppler ultrasonography or plethysmography in detecting the signs of thromboembolic disorders. In some cases, magnetic resonance imaging can be used but only in areas that are far from one’s uterus so as not to affect the pregnancy and pose risks to the baby. In most cases, radiation therapy is ruled out because of the risks that it involves.

Treatments for Thromboembolic Disorders

The main treatment for thromboembolic disorders during pregnancy is through taking anticoagulant in order to make the blood more viscous and to melt blockages in the veins, which is usually from fatty deposits in the body. Such measure is also religiously monitored to make sure that the medication will pose no harm on the mother’s and baby’s health. Other methods of treatment such as intravenous treatments are used only in certain cases and do not apply in general to all pregnancies.
