Hypertension or High blood pressure (HBP) means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pump heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean extreme emotional tension, although touching tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is above 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called "pre-hypertension", and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is consider high. Hypertension places patients at high risk for target organ damage counting, retina, brain, heart, kidneys etc.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms: High blood pressure regularly causes no symptoms.
Even if high blood pressure does reason symptoms, the symptoms are usually mild and nonspecific (vague, or suggestive of many different disorders).

Thus, high blood pressure often is labeled "the silent killer."
People who have high blood pressure typically don't know it until their blood pressure is measured.
People with average hypertension may have a tendency as they get older to develop extra sustained or higher elevations of blood pressure. They have a modestly increased danger of developing heart-related (cardiovascular) disease.

Main Causes of Hypertension

The cause of essential hypertension is multifactorial, that is, there are several factors whose combined effects produce hypertension. In secondary hypertension, which accounts for 5% of hypertension, the high blood pressure is secondary to (caused by) a specific abnormality in one of the organs or systems of the body.

These include:

* Smoking
* Obesity or being overweight
* Diabetes
* Sedentary lifestyle
* Lack of physical activity
* High levels of salt intake (sodium sensitivity)
* Insufficient calcium, potassium, and magnesium expenditure
* Vitamin D deficiency
* High levels of alcohol utilization
* Stress
* Aging

Let’s come on Hypertension treatment :

The main goal of treatment for hypertension is to lower blood pressure to less than 140/90 - or even lower in some groups such as people with diabetes, and people with chronic kidney diseases. Treating hypertension is significant for reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart failure.

High blood pressure may be treated medically, by shifting lifestyle factors, or a combination of the two. Important lifestyle change include losing weight, quitting smoking, eating a healthful diet, reducing sodium intake, exercise regularly, and limiting alcohol consumption.

Effects of Yoga on Blood Pressure :

1. Regular practice of Yoga reduces blood pressure to the tune of 10 to 15 mm / Hg (observed facts, good evidence exists to support this observation)
2. Yoga can reduce weight loss which in turn reduces blood pressure.
3. Regular Yoga performer is less likely to suffer from Hypertension than their age & sex matched counterparts. This result has been studied and proven at our center.
4. The night ‘dip’ of blood pressure a phenomenon seen in normal people and which can be absent in some hypertensive is regularly restored as observed at our center.
5. A casual Shavasana and Omkar chanting each can reduce the B.P. by about 10 – 15 mm / Hg even in an untrained person who may not practice Yoga regularly.
