Where do the days go? You're a very busy mom. You're in charge of getting your husband off to work, your kids up, clothed, fed and off to school. Maybe there's a little one still at home. There is cleaning and errands to run. Maybe you've got a home business that needs a wee bit of attention. And, there is so much on your "to do" list you're not sure you can get it all done.
You just gotta keep moving.
In a blink it's 11:30 AM and your stomach just informed you that it too needs some attention. You're so busy taking care of everything and everyone else that you forgot to eat.
What's wrong with this picture? Who is taking care of the one person who absolutely cannot afford to get ill? Not even that person... no one.
A well-known fast food place uses the slogan - "You gotta eat". It's certainly very true, but NOT as an after thought.
Mom, your body is a miraculous BIOLOGICAL machine. It is the one thing you can count on to be with you for your entire life. And, mom, here's the cold hard and unadulterated truth - only YOU are responsible for it.
So, it makes sense for you to take care of yourself, if for no other reason than to care for your babies. It is not selfish or egotistical if you remember to fuel your body. The consequences of not eating properly are fatigue, mood swings, irritability, weight gain, headaches, depression, nagging ailments, reduced immune system function (your body can't defend itself), blood sugar imbalances (could lead to diabetes), just to name a few.
Now, let's be real here. You've heard ALL of this before or you've been living in a cave. It is time to do something about it. For Real!
Here are some suggestions to for the care and feeding of "The Mom".
1. Always eat a well-balanced breakfast including protein. Coffee is NOT breakfast. A bowl of cereal does NOT qualify as a balanced breakfast regardless of what the grain manufacturers advertise.
2. Do NOT wait for your stomach to inform you it's time to eat. You are in charge of your body not your stomach.
3. Eat three meals a day and 3 healthy snacks a day.
4. Set up reminders to eat. Use an alarm clock, set a computer alarm.
5. Involve your family to help remind you to eat. Sounds silly but I'll bet they will want you to be well and healthy for a long, long time.
6. Eat when you feed your children. Not only is it a good reminder but an excellent time to share time together.
7. It is better to eat small portions throughout the day and one big meal.
You won't need reminders or alarms provided you always keep in mind the reason WHY it's important for The Mom to care for herself... because THEY need you.
