Why Break the Sugar Cycle Now?

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist (no offense to rocket scientists) to realize that one of the greatest threats to our health and the health of our children is the insanely inordinate amount of sugar manufactured into our 21st Century diets.

Added sugar is NOT necessary for good health and wellness. Sugar from corn syrup or table sugar adds no nutritional value, just empty calories.

Sugar powers our muscles, but it is sugars that the body produces from good proteins, carbohydrates and fats. So, sugar and its sister sweeteners in their various forms today, are not the kind of sugars our body needs. Get too much of the stuff in your system or your child’s system and it partly gets burned off as hyperactivity or stored as fat.

In the last 20 years, we have increased sugar consumption in the U.S. 26 pounds to 135 lbs. of sugar per person per year! Prior to the turn of this century (1887-1890), the average consumption was only 5 lbs. per person per year! Cardiovascular disease and cancer was virtually unknown in the early 1900's.

Type “sugar” into Google and you get 148,000,000 results. Top of the list is www.sugar.org. “The mission of the Sugar Association is to promote the consumption of sugar as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle…” They take issue on their home page that high fructose corn syrup is NOT sugar. Big business want you and your children to eat A LOT of sugar that neither of you need.

Start you children out in life without added sugar, sugar, sugar. You will give them a leg up in the battle against diabetes and obesity. For the first time in history parents face the possibility of outliving their children. Keep them off the sodas, both diet and regular. Candy in any form is not required for a healthy diet and it’s not good for young teeth.

Stay away from artificial sweeteners, the pink, blue and yellow stuff. Use Stevia, xylitol or even a modest amount of turbinado sugar to sweeten. Turbinado, raw sugar, is more complex, is harder for the body to digest (that is a good thing) and is not rushed into the blood stream like a simple sugar.

If your children already have a “sweet tooth” begin to wean them from it. Sugar cravings begat sugar cravings. The entire body chemistry is designed to perpetuate the cycle involving the pancreas, insulin and fat storage. Begin to remove hard candy, chips, popcorn, candy bars, M & M’s, highly sugared breakfast cereals, any pre-packed food. Read labels!

Learning about a low glycemic diet may be the best thing you can do for your family. A low glycemic diet was originally developed for diabetics. Today, it is gaining popularity as a life-style approach to eating, a means to reduce body fat and a method to keep blood sugar levels regulated.

We all want the best for our children. Life is sweet enough without promoting their sweet tooth. “It’s just this one time” or “they deserve a reward” or “it’s just easier to give in” is NOT serving the precious responsibilities Mother Nature has place in your hands.
