Is Your Water Purification Product Really Giving You Safer Drinking Water

Let us face it, recent headlines such as "Drugs In Drinking Water" and "The EPA Won't Remove Rocket Fuel From Drinking Water," all indicates that our tap water is less clean than it should be.

You may have gotten the right idea and gone out and bought a water purification system for your home. But do you know if it is giving your family the high quality they deserve?

Fact is, all water purification products are not made equal. Some devices can remove certain contaminants that others cannot. Some can only partially remove contaminants where others can totally remove those contaminants.

So, for example, if you have gone ahead and gotten a pitcher water filter (you know those that are jug-shaped) then they won't give you much protection. They might improve the taste and appearance of water but that is just about it.

Actually, the best thing you should do before you buy water purification products is to get your tap water tested. This will tell you what kinds of contaminants are affecting your water.

After you get the results of the test, you can set about getting the water purification system for your home that can best remove those contaminants.

Let me demonstrate how about the right home water treatment is. Let us say that volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and Trihalomethanes (THMs) are affecting your tap water most but you don't know this. In a rush to give your family pure drinking water, you went out and bought a reverse osmosis (ro) water filter.

Now whilst a ro filter can partially do the job, it is not very effective at removing the many synthetic chemicals that have boiling points lower than water. You'd have gotten much better protection if you had purchased an activated water purification system for your home which is highly capable of removing all VOCs and THMs.

Therefore, it is critical that you do your homework before you purchase any water purification product. Fortunately there are many websites out there with information that you help you make an informed buying decision.

One such website is the one belonging to the NSF. The NSF is the premier authority in the certification of water purification systems for your home. An NSF rating tells you what contaminants a home water treatment system is capable of removing.

So for example, a NSF 42 filter is certified to remove chlorine and sediment. So if a sales rep tells you if a NSF 42 water purifier can remove VOCs then you know he or she is not being honest or is ignorant.

The NSF is not the only body that certifies water purification products; reputable independent labs do this as well.

Any reputable supplier will have certification and product testing information on their website, available for the customer to see. And of course, the NSF has a database of all their certified water purification products.

Now that you have a better understanding of what to look for in a home water treatment system, you can have the peace of mind that the next filter you buy will actually give your family the protection from tap water contaminants that they deserve.
